The LUMIPOD is a prefabricated pod brought to you by LUMISCENE. Up until recently LUMISCENE were best known for the LUMISCENE window that uses curved glass in aluminium frames set onto two rails that provide 180 degree views as well as the ability to turn an indoor space into an outdoor one. The LUMIPOD was designed around this technology to create a stunning and unforgettable space.
The LUMIPOD measures 5.45 meters in diameters and is 3.25 meters high. The structure is made out of steel and weighs approximately 4.5 tons, consisting of a rear module that integrates all of the technical equipment and two front modules that are bolted together and attached to the rear module. The curved exterior of the pod has burned wood cladding with a protective rain sheeting on the outer face and 15cm of rockwool insulation. The roof and floor of the structure are insulated with 20cm of rock wool along with 5cm of polystyrene.
The LUMISCENE window itself, which was the starting point for the creation of the pod measures 5 meters in diameter. The window is made up of 6 panels that sit on a circular rail, with the glass featuring curved double glazing, although other options are available such as triple glazing for colder locations. Two locks are located at each end of the window to ensure security.
The specifications of the window however do not do it justice. It is clear that the pod was created around the LUMISCENE window and it acts as a focal point. Offering 180 degree views, the window wraps itself around half of the structure. When closed, the pod becomes an enclosed space, a cocoon of comfort. When opened, the boundary between inside and outside disappears leaving the occupant fully immersed in the beauty of their surroundings.
The interior of the LUMIPOD has a floor space of around 17 square meters and includes a bedroom and a bathroom. To the rear of the pod is the bathroom, which measures 5.5m² and comes equipped with a sink, a toilet, and a glass enclosed shower. The bedroom makes up the front half of the pod with 11m² of floor space featuring a suspended bed that is attached to the back wall sitting in a shallow alcove and a wardrobe. Due to the construction of the windows, a curved rod is able to be installed that offers blackout curtains across the entire glass surface.
There are a number of different finishing options available for the interior design. Wooden floors in the bedroom, plywood cladding for the walls and ceiling, and Corian or tiled wall surface for the bathroom are all available to name a few. The LUMIPOD is customisable both inside and out to ensure that the end product is tailored for the needs of the end-user.
The interior of the LUMIPOD feels rather minimalist, featuring a lot of floor space and a feeling of openness, thanks in no small part to the large windows. Stood on the inside, the LUMIPOD really does feel like a modern hotel with very high standards. The simple, but beautiful, interior design works in the pods favour as the eyes are always drawn to the LUMISCENE window and the views that it provides.
Currently, the LUMIPOD must be connected to electricity, water and wastewater networks. It comes equipped with a Mitsubishi MSZ-SF42VE 4.2kW reversible air conditioning system that provides both heating and cooling. Also present are an instantaneous water heater and electrical panel that are located in the technical room that’s positioned behind the wardrobe.
The LUMIPOD is entirely manufactured in Lyon, France and can take between two to four months to manufacture depending on the level of finishing required. Once finished the LUMIPOD can be delivered worldwide and is designed to be compatible with both road and maritime transport with each module of the structure stored in travel containers. Once on-site, the construction of the pod is overseen by the LUMISCENE team and takes around 2 days. The structure is placed onto 4 ‘light’ foundations, by default screw piles are used though different options are available dependant on soil type.
