Cooking food, entertaining guests and getting warm by an outdoor fire is a new normal. The world of Glamping is embracing this lifestyle and there has never been a better time to look at safe and practical ways of facilitating this.
The Carn Kitchen is a new product in development for the Glamping market. Visually striking, highly practical and modular by design, these can create an entire outdoor space in one easy installation.
Sam Barlow explained how the product is evolving; ‘As a designer/blacksmith based in the North of Scotland I have made many bespoke architectural pieces and I like the structural and aesthetic qualities of steel pipework. The cantilevered oven gives the piece a unique look, and I wanted a chimney tall enough to disperse smoke above head height. Of course the whole structure also had to be stable and safe, yet easy to install. Creating a strong and elegant base structure was the challenge. When the base became the floor, it opened up the possibility of bolting on other components such as seating, table, lamp post etc. Thus creating a modular outdoor space.’
Using industrial pipe connections, the components can be assembled in different ways depending on the specifics of the site and client requirements. The initial groundwork is simply a shallow excavation with a power supply if required. After the base is installed, paving, decking or turf can be re-instated and the unit is ready to be assembled. Once bolted together it is completely resistant to knocking over or nuisance theft, and effectively creates a permanent structure and outdoor space. This can then be adapted by simply bolting on new components or changing them around.
The Carn kitchen has a strong, contemporary aesthetic, creating a striking composition of cantilevered shapes, yet the features are highly practical and user friendly. The oven cooks well, giving succulent flavours as oven or grill. After the food has been prepared the fire can be built up to radiate heat and create atmosphere while enjoying the comfortable seat. New oven, barbeque, seating and table units are in development for 2021.
