The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board has opened an expression of interest (EOI) for operators, investors and developers to help establish a new adventure and nature-based tourism destination in India’s Chambal region.
The proposed Chambal Ravine Safari would span the districts of Gwalior, Morena, Bhind and Sheopur, combining the region’s distinctive ravine landscape with outdoor adventure, wildlife, cultural experiences and overnight accommodation.
The project is being positioned as an experiential tourism destination, with potential activities including off-road ravine safaris, trekking, cycling, ziplining, rope courses, kayaking, canoeing, birdwatching and nature trails. Adventure camping and glamping are also included in the initial plans.
The concept is partly inspired by the desert safari model popular in destinations such as Dubai, but would instead use the Chambal’s network of ravines and river landscapes as the setting. Proposed experiences could include four-wheel-drive excursions, river trips, sunrise and sunset activities, village visits, local food, folk performances, artisan demonstrations and stargazing, alongside overnight stays in tents or glamping units.
The Tourism Board is seeking a partner to help identify suitable locations, develop a masterplan, assess commercial and technical feasibility, and establish investment and revenue models. The selected agency could also be involved in infrastructure, accommodation, visitor facilities, safety systems, destination management and marketing.
However, the project remains at an early planning stage. Specific sites and activities will be determined following feasibility studies, environmental assessments and carrying-capacity evaluations, with development subject to the necessary approvals.
Environmental management and visitor safety have also been included in the project brief. Potential operators will be expected to establish safety procedures, employ trained staff, manage emergency response systems and minimise the impact of development on sensitive areas. Visitor numbers, waste, water use and plastic consumption are also expected to be managed as part of the development.
The initiative is intended to generate local employment and business opportunities, with proposed training for adventure guides, safari drivers, nature interpreters, first responders and customer service staff. Local guides, artisans, food producers, transport providers and other businesses could also benefit from increased tourism activity.
Online submissions for the EOI open on 30 September, with applications due by 3pm on 13 October 2026. The submissions are scheduled to be opened on 14 October.
If developed, the Chambal project would add another significant glamping and adventure tourism development to Madhya Pradesh, building on the state’s wider push towards nature-based and experiential travel.
